Pencil Colour: A Chic Handwritten Font for Modern Branding

As a creative consultant who helps small businesses refine their visual identity, I’ve seen how the right font can transform a brand from forgettable to unforgettable. Recently, I worked with a local candle maker preparing new product labels, and we decided to test out Pencil Colour — a chic handwritten font that’s masterfully designed to become a true favorite. From the first mockup, it was clear this script handwritten font brought a unique blend of elegance and modernity that elevated the entire packaging design.

Pencil Colour for Product Labels and Packaging Design

When we began rebranding the candle line, the goal was to create a look that felt artisanal yet polished. The brand needed a font that could work across different label sizes, from small jar stickers to larger swing tags. Pencil Colour stood out for its refined calligraphic influences and clean, contemporary finish. It gave the brand a personal touch without looking overly casual or messy — a common pitfall with many handwritten fonts.

We used Pencil Colour for product names and scent descriptions, pairing it with a minimalist sans serif for ingredient lists and care instructions. The contrast between the two fonts created a balanced, cohesive look that customers responded to positively. Whether printed on kraft paper or glossy sticker stock, the font held up beautifully and added a layer of sophistication.

How Pencil Colour Enhances Brand Consistency Across Materials

One of the most powerful tools in brand identity is consistency — and typography plays a huge role in that. After seeing how well Pencil Colour worked on labels, we expanded its use to thank-you cards, Instagram templates, and even digital banners for the brand’s online shop. The script handwritten style gave every piece a unified personality, making the brand instantly recognizable across platforms.

For example, the brand began including handwritten-style quotes on Instagram Stories using Pencil Colour. The font’s fresh, approachable vibe helped build a more personal connection with followers. It also worked well in print — from business cards to packaging inserts — ensuring that every customer touchpoint felt intentional and on-brand.

Using Pencil Colour in Logo Design and Display Typography

While Pencil Colour shines in short-form text like headlines and captions, it also makes a strong candidate for logo design — especially for brands in creative, lifestyle, or boutique niches. We tested it as a secondary logo element for the candle brand, using it for the tagline beneath the main logotype. The result was a soft, elegant contrast that gave the brand more emotional depth.

It’s best used as a display font rather than for long paragraphs. Think headlines, brand names, quotes, or feature phrases — not body copy. This is especially important for small print items like product tags or mobile web banners, where readability is key. When used correctly, Pencil Colour becomes a visual anchor that draws attention without overwhelming the design.

Font Pairing Ideas with Pencil Colour for Business Branding

One of the most satisfying parts of working with Pencil Colour was experimenting with font pairings. Since it’s a decorative script font, it pairs beautifully with clean, neutral typefaces. We often used it alongside a modern sans serif like Montserrat or a classic serif like Playfair Display. These combinations gave the brand flexibility — from minimalist to luxurious — while maintaining a consistent visual voice.

For digital use, we paired it with system-safe fonts for body text, ensuring legibility on mobile and desktop. For print, we leaned into more stylized pairings, especially in packaging and promotional materials where the full aesthetic impact could be felt. The result was a layered, expressive brand identity that still felt professional and cohesive.

What to Check Before Using Pencil Colour Commercially

Before finalizing the brand’s design assets, we made sure to review the font’s licensing terms. Since the candle brand sells physical products and downloadable packaging templates, it was important to confirm that Pencil Colour includes commercial use rights. We also checked the available file formats, looking for OpenType and TrueType support to ensure compatibility across design platforms.

Additionally, we explored the font’s stylistic alternates and ligatures, which added subtle customization options without complicating the design process. Multilingual support was a bonus, as the brand was planning to expand into international markets. All in all, the font provided the flexibility and professionalism needed for a growing small business.
